About the Experience

Discover the magic of Black Canyon and the Colorado River, situated immediately below the mighty Hoover Dam. Within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, a 30-mile stretch of the river has been designated as a national water trail, providing recreational and commercial boaters access. Many tours focus on the highly favored 12-mile section, extending from Hoover Dam to Willow Beach. Noteworthy river miles are indicated by visible signs along the route, with Willow Beach positioned around mile 52 and Hoover Dam marking the commencement at river mile 64. Waterproof guidebooks are available for purchase, both as actual maps with history and information and as a souvenir to remember your adventure.

Itinerary

The day starts bright and early with the Las Vegas sunrise over the river mountains. Meet your river guide, get fitted with life vests and paddling gear, and begin the winding descent down the historic portal road (used in the construction of the Hoover Dam).  After some brief paddling instruction, launch your kayak at the base of the Hoover Dam and pause for a photograph in front of this iconic structure. Explore the Black Canyon Water Trail, a breathtaking river journey that delivers exceptional value for those in search of maximum excitement. Despite the absence of whitewater, this stretch of the Colorado River is known for its emerald colors, strong currents, boils, and eddies – set amongst the harsh desert terrain of Black Canyon. Side canyons with hiking, hot springs, and wildlife will fill your kayak trip, ensuring a day brimming with exploration.
